Cats on Coins

Ever since the earliest coins were minted, some 2500 years ago, lions and other big cats have been depicted on them. In the 20th century, the increasing popularity of both the domestic cat and coin-collecting has given us various coins featuring the smaller breeds of cat.

In 1970 and 1975, the Isle of Man (situated in the heart of the British Isles, but not part of the United Kingdom) issued circulating coinage featuring the Manx Cat,

and in 1988 it started issuing coins featuring different breeds of cats on an annual basis. This official “Cat Coin Series” has become extremely popular with coin collectors the world over. The silver coins are struck in pure .999 fine silver in 1 ounce size. The gold coins are struck in pure .9999 fine gold in 1/25, 1/10, 1/5, 1/2, and 1 ounce sizes, and are minted in limited quantities. The platinum coins are struck in pure .9995 fine platinum in 1/25, 1/10, 1/5, 1/2, and 1 ounce sizes.
